National History Day Philly Educator Newsletter, October 4, 2010
Hello, Educators:
Welcome back to a new school year! I hope things are off to a great start for all of you. 2010 was the best year yet for NHD Philly, and we expect 2011 to be even more successful!
2011 Theme
“Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences”
Competition Dates: Wednesday, March 9 (juniors) and Thursday, March 10 (seniors). Registration Deadline: Friday, February 11.
As last year, we will not be able to accept any registrations past the deadline. In-school contests to qualify students for NHD Philly must be completed early enough so that all students will be registered by February 11. Also, to aid our planning efforts again, we will contact teachers in January for a quick overview of the numbers and types of projects you expect to bring to the contest.
Teacher Seminars/Student Workshops
- October 26: Where the Past Meets the Future: Learning Resources with Teachinghistory.org: In this hands-on workshop, the Outreach Director for TeachingHistory.org — an initiative of the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University — will help participants navigate through their resource-rich website. Workshop host: The National Constitution Center.
- November 9: Discovering Hidden Histories: Learn about some of the newly revealed “hidden histories” in an exciting initiative to make regional resources more accessible, and meet representatives from area libraries and archives. Also, explore the National Archives’ new exhibit "Blasting through the Silence: the Allegheny Arsenal Explosion of 1862 and the Creation of Public Memory." Workshop host: The National Archives at Philadelphia.
- November 23: Top 10 Tips from NHD Students and Teachers: Hear from NHD Philly alums at all levels about what has worked well and what didn’t work so well on their History Day journeys, and gain helpful insights and strategies into what each stage of the competition is like! Workshop Host TBD.
All workshops are from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and are open to both teachers and students. Space is limited for each workshop, so please sign up early. Act 48 credit is available for each session. Please indicate your interest in Act 48 when you sign up.
Theme-Based Student Workshops: Interested in connecting your students with local resources for this year's theme? Workshops are available at the National Archives or in your classroom, and involve several NHD Philly partner institutions. Workshops begin the week of October 18 and are scheduled upon request throughout the fall. To schedule a workshop, contact me at 215-606-0103 or Andrea.Reidell@NARA.gov
Website Projects: Website projects are now divided into two categories: Individual and Group.
Theme Books: Are available online (as is other theme-related information) at the NHD website. Hard copies can be mailed to you upon request and will be available at all of the fall workshops.
Remember: all the NHD Philly newsletters are also posted for your convenience on nhdphilly.org.
