I enjoy watching skateboarding, but it is quite selfish and irresponsible for skateboarders to destroy or damage public property to engage in the sport. This is precisely what skateboarding does to JFK Plaza/LOVE park. That said, it is a very poorly designed park and that is why it has historically had little use. Ed Bacon blew it and his support of skateboarding in the park is probably just a last hurrah effort to validate his crappy design. Legalizing skateboarding in LOVE Park would send a message that Phila wants to make itself a world-class city? Gimme a freaking break.

Dear Guestbook, Recently while visiting Phila. and the inner historic area surrounding Indenpendence Hall I while walking came upon and viewed a bronze statue entitled "The Signer". The full size statue depicted a man holding a rolled parchment paper above his head. The figure is looking through the bottom of the rolled paper. I am very interested in finding any info I can about the statue. I photographed the scene but had difficulty with the snapshot and the exposure. Please help me with any info you can provide. Thanks George C Shuman

Greetings, We have recently found a letter addressed to Guillaume Jacques Constant Liberge de Granchain dated December 1786 from M de Marbois whom I believe was French Consul in New York at the time (and who had a brother in Philadelphia ), regarding Liberge de Granchain's membership of the Philosophical Society of Philadelphia. If you should have any trace or reference concerning M. de Granchain in your archives we would be most obliged to have a copy for our own archives. We will of course be delighted to send you a copy of the above mentioned letter if this should be of interest to you. Liberge de Granchain was also a member of the Order of Cincinnati on account of his contribution at Yorktown where among other responsibilities he took part in drafting of acts of surrender with de Noailles and Col Laurens. Granchain returned to the States in 1784 to accompany La Fayette on his triumphal tour, visit G Washington at Mount Vernon and take back La Fayette to France on his frigate "Nymph". Our researchers here and in Newfoundland where Granchain made other important military and scientific contributions are keen to find american historians who may be able to help us in our researches in the US. Any help or advice would be gratefully received. With best wishes, Richard Neill President Association Liberge de Granchain 27410 Granchain France

I am webmistress of two pro bono sites: http://www.welcomehomesoldier.com and http://www.niquahanam.com The Niquahanam Project: Help to Heal the World. The first site has a Living History section that I am developing, so if you have special events in Philly you would like people to know about, please just e-mail and I will post for you. The second site is self-explanatory, and all are invited to share their thoughts. One thought I had for your site is that there are receipes that are indigenous to Philly, like the soft pretzels. Might be fun to have a regional recipe section with your site :) Be peace, Remy

The only thing that makes any country great is the G_d that is worshipped, you better make sure you are right, for He created us to glorify His name and His son is Jesus, ask to be shown the things of G_d that you can do to keep this nation great, the first is Love the Lord, the second is; Love your neighbor as your self.

I am just a U.S. citizen, but I am very thankful for our President, Vice President, military, and citizens. Who are committed in the war against terrorism. If you know the Creator. Then you know some times there must be war to stop a form of evil that is a danger to many people. Mark 13:7 shows war some times must need be. "And when you shall hear of wars, and rumours of wars, be you not troubled for such things must needs be." Please remember that Jesus Christ him self used physical force and a weapon against a form of evil in his days. In John 2:14-16. "And found in the temple those that sold oxen, sheep, and doves, and the changers of money sitting. And when he had made a scourge of small cords he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers money, and over threw the tables." This is from the King James version. Please read Matthew 10:34-39. From a U.S. citizen who cares. Thank you all for your good commitment. From michael lee guillory of modesto,ca. you can use this or print it.

It was a pleasure to find information about this wonderful cities past. My son and I really love AMerican HIstory. We live in NJ and he was curious about the city of Philadelphia's rich hertitage and his inquiring mind wanted to know more about independance. He wonder how the QUakers and slaves built this community that became a great city. Many great and powerful people came out of Phila and we wanted to know more about where we live and the cities that surround us. AFTER ALL THE EAST COAST IS RICH IN IT'S HISTORY!

This country isn't going in the direction George Washington intended for her to go. Someone put up a roadblock, kicked her in the face and jammed her transmission into reverse. It is time to get out of reverse, bypass the forward gears of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd hitting overdrive hard. George Washington saw a God given vision of America's future. The majority of today's politicians, lawyers included, are leading America into a godless future.

Thank you for this most cherished website. I did not know the meaning of the folding of the flag. It should be taught in our schools as it is part of our great American history. Shame on our government that has outlawed God from our schools and our history books. Where are our children going to learn and when and by whom? It is our responsibility and our duty to teach them the history of our beloved Flag. I have flown my flag everyday since 9-11-01 and will continue until all our service men and women have come home. Their sacrifice for freedom will not be forgotton. We honor them and President George W. Bush for their courage and committment, against all odds. "Want God to Bless America? Then, America Bless God!"

Your site has no information on John Hanson, the first US President! What a shame. He stopped a US military coup that would have installed a king in America but you ignore this piece of history. During his one-year term, he established the 'Great Seal' still used today by the President, he ordered all foreign troops off of U.S. soil, established the Treasury and Foreign Affairs departments, and declared the fourth Thursday of November to be a national holiday - Thanksgiving.

While conducting research on the 13-Star American Flag, I discovered this site and associated links. It is a wonderful thing to have so much informa- tion availed to us thru the Internet today....but it is especially important to make readily avail- able (as well as easily understood)the historical progression of our States which became united as revealed by the Declaration of Independence dated July 4th,1776. It is imperative that those that come after us comprehend that the American Flag is not merely a symbol of freedom....the thirteen stars & stripes on the very first American Flag stood for the thirteen states in existence in 1776 who joined together (became "united")and decided they no longer wished to be controlled by the Government who called the shots at that time; namely, the British. I encourage anyone who hasn't done so in awhile(or anyone who never has done so)to pull up the "Declaration of Independence", the document that explains all of that, and really read it. It has the potential to be a real eye- opener as relating to our present shot-callers.

As a researcher for the past eleven years I have discovered very few sites that reveal Americas History I have seen the ordinary people come to life through the Revolutionary War from sites like this one. The Whiteside/Stockton family from North Carolina, The Goudelock Family from South Carolina, The Welchel Family from Virginia have had a loud voice in Americas founding yet they were not listed in Americas First families with the Adams family. The Shields and Tiptons are also very much a part of the frontiersmen life style of America History that helped found the state of Indiana. I'am proud of these few blood relatives that have been forgotton in our history books.

It's neat to see that so many people are interested in the past, cause we can definately learn from our failures and successions. It would be nice if more people decided to display our flag, though, to support our country, and our president. In a time like this we need not to be ashamed of what we stand for, and what our country is built upon.

The history of this great country can and should be impressed upon our youngest generations. Many young people don't recognize the importance of the history of this great country. Just take a look at late night television, where the lack of historical cognizance is made into a joke. One wonders if the laughter following the apparent gaffe is teleprompted or genuine. This site is a great step forward. Our web site www.fivestarflags.com

I'm a 31 year old mother of two. I've lived in Philadelphia all of my life and had only visited our hisorical sites once. This was on a school trip while in the 3rd grade. I finally went back to center city again and made a day trip out of it with my older child visiting all we could fit in such as Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, the Liberty Bell, saw the Magna Carta and other pertinent locations and historical artifacts. I can't believe it took me all that time to relive Philadelphia history! It's amazing how those of us only minutes away from all of the history our city has to offer takes it for granted. It's all so wonderful and rich in history that all Philadelphians should make a point to familiarize themselves with our city's past...the building blocks that helped build this great country. My daughter and I met people from all over the world, China, Israel, Ireland, and we also helped give directions to a visitor from England. What a wonderful city we are in that so many people come here to be taken back into time and take a walk through history. COME ON PHILADELPHIA RESIDENTS...VISIT OUR HISTORICAL LANDMARKS AND SEE HOW RICH IN HISTORY OUR CITY IS!

Would you answer a student question for me? More than one copy of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were made in the 18th century. How exactly did the founding fathers make copies to send to the states? Did they make exact replicas by handwriting each one, was the text of the documents simply printed in the newspapers of the time, or what? I know it's a detail, but, students (and teacher) want to know.

Chris was my oldest brother. Growing up here at the house was always entertaining because Chris was always his dorkself. I didn't really see Chris that much when he lived here, and then he married and that marriage was ruined, but then he found Shannon who he really loved and she loved him. I just hope Chris is doing everything he should be doing up in Heaven and I hope and pray that he didn't suffer when he was killed. I miss my brother so much. We are trying to find My husbands aunt who married Lester (L. L.)Burke. A few lears ago a relitive found a letter from Lester saying Carrie had died 7th. June 1933. He said she was buried in Mount Moriah cemetery Philadelphia Pa. I got a death certificate which said her parents were unknown. The letter said there were 3 children. Hazel, Helen and Lislie a son.He said in the letter he had to work and didn't know what he could do that he didn't want to put the children in a foster home or up for adoption. Would you send me imformation how we may get in touch with News paper and perhaps run a add. We understand Lester moved a lot with his job. We think worked in some way with timber. Thank you for News paper address and any other suggestions you might have. The letter was wrote 27th June 1933. It said helen had a Mastory in her left ear. Was able to walk hoped she could come home soon. This leads us to think she was also in hospital. Do you also have a name and address for hospital of that time or place where records may have been kept? Thank you D.T. Hunter

I have unique personal photos and documents about the sinking of the S.S. Athenia in Sept. 1939. One of the first acts of aggression by the Germans . I want to find a museum or other entity that archives such photos and documents and would be inaterested in having these memorabilia.

After finding ancestors who fought on both sides in the Revolutionary War, and two who may have come face to face on opposing sides during the surrender at Yorktown in 1781, I found it facinating to watch the annimation of the ship one of those ancestors could might have been on traveling down the coast, while the other would have been with General Washington, watching the movement of the ship from land. I'll look forward to visiting this site often. If I'd had something similar to this site as a child, my interest in history might have taken off decades earlier. Keep up the great work!

Looking back I never would have gotten married if I knew then what I know now that I had to give up Philadelphia steak sandwiches. Wish I could buy some online. You can take me out of Pa. but you cant take Pa. out of me. Philadelphia I miss you and the Dick Clark bandstand which we used to skip school to be on tv. Anyone remember the old 'automat' in Philadelphia, put in money, turn the knob and get the food out. How about old south street where the shopping was 'the in thing', how about 'too soon old and too late smart'. Where has the time gone or where has my life gone. I hate Minnesota. No place like 'home'.

I just want to tell everyone to not take family and life for granted. I never got to tell my brother I love him and I never actually got to tell him good-bye. My brother was a wonderful person but I never appreciated growing up with him. When he moved out, I was upset, I figured I would never talk or see him again. Then he moved back and I was so estatic. I love my brother and I want him to know. I want everyone to love their family and let them know. Please all don't take life for granted, someday the one you love will not be there.
