George Washington's Birthday

Three cheers for the man of the hour! George Washington's Birthday is celebrated by many Americans in February on President's Day. Here are a few fun facts about Washington Crossing's most famous guest:

  • Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. That would make him years old this year!
  • Washington had his first job as a surveyor of Culpeper County in Virginia. He was only 16/17 years old when he started.
  • George Washington was the first President of the United States of America, from 1789-1797.
  • Many people think General Washington had wooden teeth. He did, in fact, wear false teeth, but they were not wood at all, but bone and ivory. The animal bone would stain after awhile from drinking or eating certain foods making them look like the brown color of wood.
  • George Washington died at his home in Mount Vernon in 1799. General H. Lee said that Washington was, "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." This is to remind us that Washington was our first military leader as an independent nation, our first President during peace after the war, and that he will always be remembered in American history.
