At an October 31, 2002, meeting, NPS officials, community participants, and the design teams from the Olin Partnership and Vincent Ciulla Design brainstormed about the President's House, Washington's and Adams's presidencies, Washington as a slave owner, and Adams as a proto-abolitionist, the lives of the eight enslaved Africans in Washington's presidential household, and the lives of free and enslaved blacks in Philadelphia and the nation. Ideas and facts were written on index cards.
