Mayor Rendell announced that he would seek $3.5 million from the Delaware River Port Authority to complete funding construction of the President's House memorial at Independence National Historical Park and to begin an endowment to maintain the project.
The memorial, planned for the site where Presidents George Washington and John Adams lived and worked during their administrations, will commemorate the nation's first two executive families and the nine slaves who served Washington.
Rendell said the funds come from a pool of unused program money allocated over a decade ago. No new funding derived from tolls will be touched, he said. Construction can now begin in earnest on the $8.5 million project. Officials said they expect completion by the fall of 2010.
