There is a new and intriguing attraction for tourists and locals, alike, on Independence Mall. The President’s House opened today to large crowds and rave reviews.
On the site, at 6th & Market, stood a home where Presidents George Washington and John Adams lived, while Philadelphia was the Nation’s capital in the 1790s.
Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting brings an end to several years of controversy.
Fox 29’s Bruce Gordon, an admitted history buff, reports that the exhibit will give you a sense of the house itself- with plenty of information about the slaves held by President Washington while he lived there, and a view of the actual foundation of the Nation’s first ‘White House’.
For years, the story of slavery — in existence just a half a block from the birthplace of freedom and democracy — was literally and figuratively buried here. This exhibit tells that story, and its importance.
