Briefly... Protesters seek memorial at Liberty Bell for slaves
About 500 people gathered outside of the Liberty Bell Pavilion on Wednesday to urge the National Park Service to build a slavery memorial as part of plans for a new Liberty Bell Center.The group, which called itself Avenging the Ancestors Coalition, protested recent discoveries that George Washington kept eight slaves on the property when it was used as the country's first presidential residence.
"This is a crime scene," said Michael Coard, a lawyer from Philadelphia. "Slavery was a crime against humanity."
