Cornwallis Finds an Empty Camp

On September 13th, two days after the Battle of Brandywine, Howe ordered Lord Cornwallis to lead a group of British Grenadiers and Light Infantry in pursuit of the Americans at Chester. Cornwallis marched to Ashtown, a village outside of Chester. He saw that the camp at Chester was deserted. Having no orders to follow the Americans, Cornwallis returned to Howe at Chad's Ford.
