Fording

Fording refers to the act of wading through a river or stream. Crossing a river with an army was rarely a simple proposition. Armies had horses, cannon, supplies and sometimes thousands of soldiers which had to pass through the water. Commanders not only had to have an in-depth knowledge of the lay of the land, but also of the depth of river.
