Philosophical Hall![]() American Philosophical Society 5th St. between Chestnut and Walnut The American Philosophical Society was America's first think tank. Founded by Benjamin Franklin, the rolls of the APS are filled with noble laureates and national leaders, including former APS president Thomas Jefferson and Albert Einstein. The APS was founded in order to foster discussion of scientific, philosophical and political issues. The APS also sponsored the Lewis and Clark expedition that explored America's frontier during Jefferson's term.
