I have always loved the Declaration Of Independence as well as the Constitution of the United States. I wish I had pursued a law degree. I love the history of our great nation and I have traveled the world enough to know that the United States is truly unique in all the world. A country with principles and values worth fighting and even dying for. but so many of us do not realize the meaning of liberty versus - what Alexis De Toqueville wrote in Democracy in America - a soft tyranny. The federal government should not be allowed to tell us what type of toliets to use, light bulbs to use, cars to drive, etc. Where will it stop! Your website is great. Now how do we get people to read it and actually learn from it? You may lead a horse to the Declaration but you can't make him think.

I was recently in Portsmouth, NH and happened to drive by the tree that was planted in 1776 in honor of William Whipple signing the Declaration of Independence. An avid U.S. History family, we wanted to look up William Whipple so as to be informed about this man's legacy. Thank you so much for your concise and informative biographies on the signers of the Declaration. Never again will we have to speculate about Whipple's contribution to American History!

The Declaration of Independence quantified the rights of the thirteen colonies then and the american people now. The purpose of my study of this document and the Revolutionay war is to reflect on the decline of freedom and liberty now in progress by our federal government. I do this by reflecting on the ultimate sacrifices made by over 1,290,000 men and women in our armed forces while at the same time our federal government is cranking out some 74,000 pages of laws and regulations which is clearly undermining these sacrifices.

I think the foresight that our founding fathers had in creating this new government is absolutely amazing. They actualy knew that what they were doing in 1776 (and later) was going to affect generations of Americans. But, what is equally amazing, is how close they came to failing on many occasions. I mean, the Continental Army didn't really win a lot of battles! There are a lot of "What if's", aren't there? Anyway, if George and Thomas and Ben, etc. could see us now, I think they would be amazed at how we grew and happy that We, the People still run things!

I decided to read the Declaration today after hearing Glenn Beck suggest that everyone do so today. I was suprised to see that many of the reasons that our founding fathers were citing as a reason to declare independence from Britain can be applied to the "gang" running Washington today. Specifically that they are at warp speed passing legislation that is infringing on our Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and the fact that we are today geeting taxation without representation.

I will not say I am a a all knowing political type. In my 45 yrs of life I never seen such blatant abuse, and misuse of taxpayer funds by those we call elected officials. All my adult life has been spent working, 1) to support my family and myself. 2)to pay tax's ect to help support my state and my federal Gov't. As of late, from what I've read and have seen on the news. Be it paper, TV, or internet. It has become obvious that many of our "leaders", be it elected or appointed by those elected. Have failed the people miserably, and continue to heap tax after tax on the people, and rule after rule upon us to make up for their mistakes, and wasteful spending of our money. These same political hacks then promise "LIE" to fix it all and tell us this or that to win an election only to have their promise's miss the mark, or never be fulfill at all. While they continue to over spend our tax's to the point we, the people of NJ get nothing in return unless we are friends of them and receive funds from them in the form of pork. Tax tax tax. I for one am sick of the lie's and waste. I wish I could tell someone in Charge, get help from someone. But there is nobody there for the little guy. The only time I'll here from "them" is if I don't pay my tax's. Unless of course I'm one of them, then tax's would only be an issue at election time. Or If I'm to be appointed to the administration of the new leaders.

Would that we would all remember what this country was founded on. We need to read this and The Constitution often as we watch our government destroy all that these brilliant men envisioned and so many of our countrymen and women have bled for. God Bless America

Thank you for making this information available. If we don't cherish our freedoms and the foundation of this nation, we will surely lose it. It's unfortunate that many in this land know so little about it's history.

bless the lord for the men who risked it all and stood up to a king and his army and created a nation based on an idea that men could govern each other. too bad many of our politicians today have warped that idea into their own idea seeking out fortune and glory and lord help us, their legacy!

Long live America. My family has been here since 1620. One of my ancestors, Robert Morris, financed the American Revolution!
I will always be in awe of the stout courage it took for the signers who took action and stood by their commitments, through painful losses and tortures endured not only for their own belief in what was right, but in their desire for a legacy for us all.

It is with pride I and my sister have preserved certain ancient family documents and geneological research connecting us and our offspring to those "revolutionary" high thinking signers. I and my daughter and son retain the patriotic activism vital to the survival of this nation and precepts of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution and mourn many modern departures, misperceptions, and misuses.

Every word was carefully chosen. Every phrase is a statement made to the ages. It makes me proud as an American to note that a declaration of the facts leading to the necessity of our independence needed to be stated due to “a decent respect to the opinions of mankind”. And I humbly submit that the free people of America will lead the world toward a better tomorrow only in times when we keep “a firm reliance on the protection of Devine Province”.

I agree with Tom from Maine that we may need another revolution to remind our elected officials what their role is in our government. It is not to be served but to serve! Thomas Jefferson and his fellow founders foresaw our situation today as being very possible. What are we going to do about it? This site is very much needed and very informative. I've put it in 'my favorites.'

Looks like the time is again coming to fight for our freedom!
We wanted to know how many signatures on the document for a trivia question and found this wonderful site. There is so much information just by pushing a few buttons. I learned more this morning in a few minutes than any classroom I was ever in. Many thanks!
I found this site while working on my 10th grade research report. This is a very organized and well laid-out site filled with very interesting and helpful information. Let's all try to remember, this fourth of July, that our nation was founded on, and this document was based on christian and biblical principles and morals. Let's all try to act in a Godly and christian manner to ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our Creator, who created "all men equal" and all deserving to be treated with respect and dignity from the youngest unborn child to the oldest person, from the most innocent to the most helpless. GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS! GOD BLESS AMERICA!
