Dr. Sheldon Hackney announced as recipient of the 2010 Franklin Founders Award

This year's birthday celebration, which pays tribute to Dr. Franklin, explores the nature of American Character. How do Americans see themselves in the world, and how are they perceived? Are these distinctive traits, and how have they evolved through the years? What role did Benjamin Franklin play in creating this character?
These concepts will be explored in a morning seminar led by national leaders (to be announced). This will be followed by a public procession to Dr. Franklin's grave.
Lunch at the Downtown Club includes the presentation of the Franklin Founders Award, with a keynote address on the theme.
Dr. Sheldon Hackney, the recipient of the 2010 award, has studied the development of American Character throughout his distinguished career. He has served as chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, president of the University of Pennsylvania, and is currently the Boies Professor of US History at Penn.
Further information about the 2010 event and tickets will be posted soon. For photos on the 2009 celebration, click here.
