Flag Has to Go
The Leland Town Council decided the flag at the Buy & Go in Leland has to go. In a discussion regarding the flag, Code Enforcement Officer Ashley Barefoot presented a PowerPoint presentation showing part of the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, § 173: Display and use of flag by civilians; codification of rules and customs; definition.
During the discussion, it was determined that based on the height of the flag pole, at 40 foot, the large flag could not be flown at half staff without touching the ground. This would be a violation of the code and show disrespect for the flag. The council decided not to take any action regarding the current town ordinance; therefore the owner of the convenience store will be notified that the flag is not in compliance and instructed to remove the flag o face a daily fine until in compliance.
When this issue came to light back in April of this year, many residents voiced their concerns and signed petitions to keep the flag. At the meeting last night, no one from the public spoke up in favor of letting the flag stay.
