She did not make the first ever flag of the United States
Andrew Baumgartner, Westerville, Ohio [12-07-2005]

Hi, I was just wondering what sort of historical facts you have to back up the statements made on this site. Other than a story told in 1870, nearly a hundred years after the first flag is said to have been made, I really don't see an evidence that Betsy Ross made the first flag, or any flag resembling "Old Glory". While it's nice to see people taking an interest in history, I don't feel making dramatic stories behind what was probably a simple business transaction as educational. Let's just stick to the facts, shall we?

lynzee herrington, Albany, Louisiana [11-16-2005]

Betsy Ross' diligence, courage, and patriotism is very much admired. Betsy Ross' 3rd husband was John Claypoole (my 2nd cousin 7 generations ago). John Claypoole was an old friend of Betsy's 2nd husband, Joseph Ashburn, who was captured by the British and sent to Old Mill Prison in England where he died in March 1782. John Claypoole also spent some time in the Old Mill Prison and was the one that told Betsy of her 2nd husband's death. John Claypoole and Betsy Ross Asburn were married in May 1783; they had 5 daughters.

I have a question. Our office has three flag poles, in the past we had the American flag in the middle, the Alabama state flag to the right and an Australia flag to the left. (Company owned by Australia Corporation). The rope and pulley on the middle pole broke. What is the proper way to fly the US flag with one empty pole?

Hello, I'am a preschool teacher at the Geneva Square Head Start Stop Organization program. I'am teaching my class about the history of the American Flag. For the last four years at this center, I've been encouraging the children to recite some things about the flag such as, "Who made our flag,How many stars are on the flag, the colors, What do the stars represent, Betsy Ross race, sex etc.

I have been priviledged to portray Betsy Ross. Many children have no idea who this couragous woman was. I conclude my program by singing "In Defense of Fort McHenry." People do not stand nor do they sing this hymn which we know as our National Anthem. How telling is this lack in our educational system.

I have a newfound interest in American History and geneology after taking several History courses and having a father with a passion for our family's history! I am informed through research that Betsy Ross is a great, great, great...(and probably a few more) grandmother of mine under the name Claypool (her second marriage)- so I find it fascinating that while studying US History I am also gaining knowledge of my family's heritage!
