While the shutters for the first floor windows are located on the exterior of the house, those on the second floor are located on the interior. This would facilitate the opening and closing of these shutters, particularly in the winter months. The interior shutters are not original to the house; they were installed c.1820 by John Goddard Watmough. The size and number of closets at Hope Lodge is unusual for houses of this period. There are closets in every major room and more than one in each of the bedchambers. In this bedroom there are three closets, all of them large even by today's standards. The fourth door (nearest the outside wall) leads to the service staircase. The Degns used this bedchamber as a guest room. Occasionally some of the Degns relatives visited. The furniture in their Colonial Revival bedroom is a mix of 18th, 19th, and 20th c. pieces. The dressing table and the clock date from the 18th century. The highboy is a centennial piece from the late 19th century; the beds are from John Wanamakers, where Mrs. Degn enjoyed shopping, and probably date from the 1920's.
