Thank you very much! I looked up the document to check on the exact wording, usage, and context of the phrase: "...the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God..." I was delighted to find the comparison chart, showing evolutionary changes in the Declaration of Independence. I found this most encouraging, since I have been (for better or for worse: for some twenty-five years now) drafting some proposed "People's Pledges and Declarations for Peace" — attempting to identify and express some intellectually and scientifically defensible, effective, and testable "Highest Common Ideals" for peace throughout the world...(perhaps, someday, beyond!) It is my hope that these offerings will be widely inspiring to people and responsible institutions as ethical standards and instruments of commitment; that they will help people everywhere, in due time (one hopes sooner than later!) to transcend merely partisan politics and religious/cultural differences and allow the underlying issues to be discussed, debated, and resolved more productively, efficiently, pleasantly, and safely.

I believe that all Presidential candidates should be able to recite the Declaration of Independence before they can qualify to run for office. Our present President recently quoted from the document and somehow omitted 'by their Creator' when citing, endowed.......with certain unalienable rights.

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security." The ThinkQuest project is designed to help students realize that the Declaration of Independence is just as meaningful today as when it was first written. It is the bedrock our all of our freedoms. Our Founding Fathers were Fabulous!

I believe the MEANING of the Declaration of Independence is that each of us exits because of the same creative process, the rights to which each of us are entitled are necessarily equal. Such rights are best understood as FREEDOMS from interference, either by other people or by government of course implies that others are entitled to be free from interference. And the Importance of the Declaration of independence is in addition to announcing the colonies freedom from the British rule, this sets forth the founding principles of the United States of America. The importance has not diminished since its adoption in 1776. Its initial importance was limited as a formal declaration of freedom. And the INTENT of the Declaration of Independence would be one of the ideas that Jefferson wrote about was the freedom of religion. This was a core idea that made the basis of a republican society work.

THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE The intent of the Declaration of Independence was to inform the world of the abuses of King George 111 of Great Brittan that justified Independence. In the day leading up to the Declaration by the Continental Congress, there were many Americans who have not yet decided which side they wanted to be on. My guess is that reason for their indecisiveness was the fact that in the 18th century (1700’s), the United States of America was not a country. It was a colony of Great Brittan and all the people had to do what the King of Great Brittan said. But in thirteen years of fighting (1763 to 1776), the colonies went from loyal subjects, helping the war cause, to actual rebels, intent on expelling Britain from the world it had conquered, and intent on its own independence. The meaning of the Declaration of Independence is that all people are created equal. Everyone should have rights, the right of life, freedom and happiness. It was meant so the people can make a government to protect their rights of life, freedom and happiness so they can be safe. Also, the government must do what the people say and it is called a democracy. The way in which this democracy was created is in the year 1776, the American people wanted to make America a country, they met in the American city of Philadelphia. During the meeting on June 20, 1776, they gave an important job to John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, Robert R. Livingston of New York and Roger Sherman of Connecticut. They wanted them to write a paper that said why America should be a country and that the leaders of America would use this paper to declare independence and make America apart from Great Britain. The importance of the Declaration of Independence, The Declaration of Independence is the most important of all American historical documents written by Thomas Jefferson, one of our nation’s founding fathers and it was given formal acceptance in the year 1776. It is a partisan document presented to the world with a unique combination of general principles and an abstract theory of government with a detail enumeration of specific grievance and injustices has given it enduring power as one of a great political document of the West.

In reading the short biography of Caesar Rodney, I was amazed and disappointed. Many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence suffered greatly and lost everything they possessesd including their families. They knew, that in placing their signatures on this magnificent document, they were signing their own death warrents. I am not interested in the political careers of these heros, I want to know about the cost they paid for this free land we take for granted

I was watching some of the "EMMY" awards this past Monday night & when Kyra Sedgewick won Best Actress there was trivia about her ancestor also a signee of the Dec of Independence. On National TV it was said that she gets a 'Royalty' every year on July 4TH. I want to know if this is TRUE & what our family has to do to also get these royalties. My Uncle Bills' eldest daughter has set-up a scholarship in my Grandmothers name in Albany, N.Y. University. I cannot speak for all the family; however, if there is money owed to us - we would probably want it to go into this scholarship. Hope to hear from you soon as I will be contacting the Hooper Clan. thank-you & sincerely, Nola Gibbs. P.S. I am Grandmas namesake
Nola Gibbs, Both my mothers' parents trace back to the "Mayflower" & my mothers eldest brother is named William King Hooper ; named after the William Hooper who signed the Dec of Independence. [09-08-2010] »»»

Letter to my son taking a college course Philosophy 103- Introduction to Ethics at Penn State: American Philosophy is based upon the Declaration of Independence. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed...with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Andrew, you have often stated that the most important goal in your life, or anyone's life, is to make yourself or they, themselves, happy and that you or they have a right to pursue that goal. This attitude or philosophy is based upon your being an American and through that upon the American Declaration of Independence. Whether or not that document is further based upon ideas or philosophies that preceded it or came from elsewhere may be important, but doesn't change that end philosophy you (and I) as Americans have adopted because of that document. The reason that I tell you other people's feelings and rights are important are founded simultaneously and equally upon that very same basis. That basis is the Declaration of Independence stating that ALL men are equally endowed with the rights of pursuit of happiness, liberty, and life. Therefore, while you and I as Americans do have the right to the pursuit of our own happiness, it does not include the right to depriving any other person of their life or liberty or pursuit of their own happiness as they are entitled to the right of their own by that same American Declaration. Neither may they deprive us of ours. Other Americans will stand by us as we exercise our right to stand and defend these rights for ourselves and our obligation to stand and defend these rights for other Americans.
Michael L Robinson, Philadelphia, 50's, physician [09-04-2010]

I watch Glenn Beck sometimes. I think he has a lot of guts to view his opinions. He is brave. 6 days ago he did a rally in front of the Lincoln Memorial called restoring honor. I thought it was great but what is funny is that yesterday they did a John Lennon tribute in front of that same memorial. I have not seen it mentioned in the paper today. I believe John lennon has a secret coming. That secret is a daughter (lovechil) who is suppose to inherit some money. That is why there are so many tributes for John Lennon all of a sudden. Also Paul and Yoko are doing a lot of crying. These two are theives. They prevented the daughter from getting her truth for 25 years. Don't you think they need to be brought to justice. Somewhere, Somehow the truth is coming and they know the world will see their dirty deed.

i am a mid aged possible future historian. i recommend that you state the mystery on the constitution and the declaration.on the bottom of the constitution, it has twelve states down where people stated there names. Please note i said only twelve.and on the top of the declaration, it says these THIRTEEN states. as you probably know, the declaration was written before the constitution. so why would it say there was 12 states on the constitution. when there is 13 states on the decleration which was written before... Just so you know, this stumped a historian in washington DC. I was the one who realized this.

When did we forget these words from The Declaration: "Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." What exactly has this President and this Congress done that we the governed have consented to? Now approximately 65% oppose his performance and yet, he still refrains from listening to we the people. I hope people read every word of the document, you will come across other references of the King that could be speaking of present government.

It would serve our nation well for EVERYONE to re-read this Declaration and reflect on it. Then, demand that our current government, Legislature, Judiciary, and Executive branches honor the principles of those who pledged "...to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor..." so that we could be free from the tyranny from THIS, our current government and their 'handlers', the corporations who dictate their actions.
