We learned that the Declaration is kept in Washington, D.C. at the Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom.On the back of the Declaration of Idependence says "Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776 but they dont know if it was just a label or if one of the signers of the Declaration wrote it on there. We also learned that Benjamin Franklin went to the Universities of Edinburgh and Oxford.

Elijah Harryman, my Great, Great, Great Grandfather fought for this Declaration! On Dec. 26, 1776, under Col. Henry Knox's Artillery regiment Elijah fought for General George Washington. The General’s Army (of 2500) crossed the Delaware and captured Trenton NJ from Hessian mercenaries who were fighting for the British. We as a people must understand what motivated these heroes who sacrificed untold hardship and their lives for their freedom. As Citizens, we must now protect the freedoms these heroes handed down to us; many Citizens currently feel our Government is strangely assuming the role that Great Britain did in 1776!

My thoughts about the Declaration of Independence is intended to be good but turned out bad because of who runs our world, rights, and most importantly, the people. In Declaration of Independence it says that people have the right to do something if they feel that the government is not doing its job, we have the right to refuse or deny something we feel is not right. but still the government over powers the shouldnt be like that. the people have more power, or we should, but it doesnt work that way anymore.. god information though.

I never realized that part of the revolt was against England's offer of protection to the Native Americans and established a territory for them. I found it disturbing to learn that the founders had no respect for any rights of natives. I shouldn't be surprised, but that part of the story wasn't in the context of the whole story until I read more here. I'm a huge history buff, and the American Revolution is one of my favorite time periods. Anya, that's so cool that your (numerous) great uncle was Benjamin Franklin! And it does focus mainly on means rights, Brenda, but it was a time controlled mainly by men, and we speak of our species as men, not just the gender-huMANS, woMEN, MAN (that one's kinda obvious), and countless others.

I'm reading John Jakes's Bicentennial and rereading all My America's history I loved so much 55 or so years ago. When I read again of the passion that the colonists felt for our country with so few to fight and with such a shortage of guns and amunition in the beginning. Yet they were willing to defend their countrymen's rights to freedom. The Declaration of Independence means as much today for all of us.

One quote summed it up perfectly i.e. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Your struggle to free yourselves paved the way for the French Revolution and the subsequent movements for democracy in Europe i.e. the Chartist Movement of 1839, here in Wales. May I suggest especially for the younger readers, Tom Paine's 'Rights of Man' as background reading to the American cause for liberty. Be proud young America, because your country has over the last hundred years or so, has had to clear up the mess(sometimes with little thanks), that the colonial powers of Europe(including Britain) have left in many parts of the world. It's astounding what our declaration says. I just read since not having read it in years. Our government needs to live up to this. The government now makes all the decisions for us, we don't get to decide anything. It's a dictatorship now, we are no longer a free independant country.
