OK, I'm confused. The first draft is by Adams' hand, and the rough draft is by Jefferson's. Is Jefferson's the original? Also, I find it fascinating that both drafts firmly and unequivically condemn the act of slavery, yet the Congress chose to strike those comments before approval of a final draft. It took another 84 years to undo that nightmare.

Please visit the website: http://www.masshist.org/cabinet/august2001/august2001.html This site has an original document titled: An Alphabetical List of the Sons of Liberty who din'd at Liberty Tree, Dorchester, 14 August 1769. "This list of the Sons of Liberty present at the festivities was compiled by William Palfrey, one of the participants. His grandson, John Palfrey, donated it to the Society in August 1869, on the 100th anniversary of the event. Because of the organization's secrecy, this list provides a rare glimpse into its membership." I'd also double check John Adam's diary as well. Contrary to popular perception, the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution is the document upon which our nation is founded. With the recent election of Barack Obama I'm currently researching the Civil Rights movements from about 1953 to the present. in 1962 I was 15 and sickened by the TV news of dogs and firehoses turned on toddlers and granny's. I ran away from home to march with Dr. King. I wound up sleeping in Andy Youmg's basement alomg with Bayard Rustin and mant others. From 1966 until the laws were changed, and the announcement and warning of civil penalties is in every newspaper published today. It is illegal to practise discrimination in housing.

A rare piece of American history is up for sale. And I think it should be owned by the U.S. government. It is the original 50 star flag. It is owned by Bob Heft, the flag's designer. About Bob: Robert G. (Bob) Heft (born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1942) is a designer of the 50 star flag, and one of the proposed designs for a 51 star flag for the United Sates of America. He spent his childhood in Lancaster, Ohio, where he created the flag as a school project. He designed the current U.S. flag in 1958 while living with his grandparents. He was 17 years old at the time and did the flag design as a class project. He unstitched the blue field from a family 48-star flag, sewed in a new field, and used iron-on white fabric to add 100 hand-cut stars, 50 on each side of the blue canton . This flag must be sold, because of Bob's failing health and family situations. As of yet, we've only had interests from overseas, and would like this to remain in the U.S.A. Great information! However, on the bio's for different signers, it doesn't mention ANY of their Christian influence, which were fundamental in their revolutionary beliefs. Now, not all of them were Christians, I know that, but John Witherspoon? He was a pastor! It doesn't mention that!

I have the movie 1776 (a musical version of the creation of the Declaration) and after watching that then reading the different versions of the Declaration, I realize how difficult it must have been to create a document establishing a new country's independence while still maintaining some of the acceptable principles of England.
